Regular caravan and trailer maintenance

Wheel bearings, brakes and running gear are common areas of concern when it comes to trailers or caravans and these should be checked at least once a year to ensure they are operating correctly. Problems with the wheel bearings or brakes can make the caravan or trailer difficult to control when towing and can significantly increase your stopping distance and use of fuel, particularly under heavy loads. Running gear, couplings, lights, bushes, wiring, springs, latches, chassis mounts and cables should all be considered when having a trailer or caravan serviced. The list can become much more complex. depending on the type of vehicle you own and the way you tend to use it.

Since lack of use causes its own problems, leisure vehicles should be serviced on an annual basis - even if your touring caravan is used only a couple of times a year. Even if you have only used the caravan for a few weekends during last year, that is not a sure indicator that everything is fine, as over time fluids deplete, dust collects and fixtures deteriorate, even on mechanical equipment that is not being used. Most especially, rarely used mechanical vehicles need to be checked before entrusting them with your family and valuables.

Unsealed outback roads often frequented by caravans and trailers can adversely affect tyres, suspension, body and fittings. If you plan on long and regular touring, especially on poorly surfaced roads, please consider more than one service per year. When you book your caravan in for a service we will check your caravan according to a service check list and habitation damp report which covers over 60 different checks.

Many trailer and caravan manufacturers recommend towed vehicles should be serviced every 10,000km or 12 months. If you do a lot of towing your caravan or trailer it pays to keep it running smoothly to help minimise fuel expenditure in addition to safety concerns. Better be safe than sorry, so call The Engine Bay now and book in your caravan!

We will explain all of our work in an easy to understand manner, and advise you of any extra work that may be required on your trailer or caravan before commencing with the task.

Have your caravan or trailer service performed by The Engine Bay, the team with the specialist expertise, facilities and training specific to trailer and caravan servicing, to get the job done right.
